When we lose someone we love, people often tell us what we should do.
"Be strong."
"Give it time."
"Stay busy."
"You'll eventually move on."
While these words are usually well-intentioned, they rarely answer the question that matters most:
What does my grief actually need?
Through my own journey after losing my wife and through supporting others as a Certified Grief Educator, I've come to realise that grief isn't simply something we endure—it has needs.
When those needs are acknowledged with compassion, healing begins. Not because the pain disappears, but because we gradually learn to live with it in a healthier way.
At Heal Together Circle, these are what I call The Six Needs of Grief.
1. To Have Your Pain Witnessed
One of the deepest needs after loss is to feel seen.
Not to be given advice.
Not to be told to "stay positive."
Not to be rushed through your grief.
Simply to have someone acknowledge your pain and say,
"I see how much this hurts."
Being truly heard can be one of the most healing experiences in grief. Often, we don't need answers—we need someone willing to sit with us in our pain.
2. To Express Your Feelings
Grief brings many emotions—sadness, anger, guilt, fear, loneliness, confusion, and sometimes even relief.
Many people hide these emotions because they don't want to burden others or appear weak.
But grief needs expression.
Whether through conversation, journaling, prayer, tears, or quiet reflection, allowing your feelings to surface is an important part of healing.
There are no "wrong" emotions in grief. Every feeling deserves compassion.
3. To Release the Burden of Guilt
After someone dies, many people replay the past.
"If only I had called."
"I should have done more."
"What if I had noticed sooner?"
These thoughts are incredibly common, yet they can become a heavy burden.
While it's natural to have regrets, it's equally important to recognise that grief often magnifies self-blame.
Healing involves learning to separate what was truly within your control from what wasn't, allowing you to hold onto love without being trapped by guilt.
4. To Heal Old Wounds
Loss has a way of reopening wounds we thought had healed.
A recent bereavement may remind us of earlier losses, unresolved relationships, childhood experiences, or painful memories that were never fully processed.
Sometimes, what feels overwhelming isn't just today's grief—it's years of unspoken pain asking to be acknowledged.
Healing these old wounds allows us to move forward with greater peace and emotional freedom.
5. To Integrate Pain and Love
Many people fear that healing means forgetting the person they love.
It doesn't.
Healing isn't about leaving your loved one behind.
It's about learning to carry both the pain of their absence and the love that will always remain.
Over time, the relationship doesn't end—it changes.
The pain may become gentler, while the love continues to shape who you are.
6. To Find Meaning After Loss
Grief changes us.
The life we imagined may no longer be possible.
Eventually, many grieving people begin asking,
"What does my life look like now?"
Finding meaning isn't about finding a reason for the loss.
It's about discovering how to live in a way that honours your loved one while continuing your own journey.
Meaning grows slowly, one gentle step at a time.
Healing Begins When Our Needs Are Met
These six needs are not stages that happen in a particular order.
You may move between them many times throughout your grief journey.
Some days you may simply need someone to witness your pain.
Other days you may need to express your emotions or let go of guilt.
Months or years later, you may find yourself searching for meaning.
There is no timeline and no right or wrong way to experience these needs.
The important thing is to recognise them and give yourself permission to honour them.
You Don't Have to Walk This Journey Alone
Grief can feel incredibly lonely, but you don't have to carry it by yourself.
Whether your loss is recent or happened years ago, healing becomes easier when your pain is witnessed with compassion and understanding.
At Heal Together Circle, the Six Needs of Grief form the foundation of both our Grief Support Community and 1-1 Grief Coaching.
If you're looking for a safe space where you can be heard, understood, and supported, I'd be honoured to walk alongside you.
